Making curtailed PV viable: BESS techno-economic evaluation for two UK projects

Techno-economic evaluation of adding battery storage to two PV projects — 42 MWp at Glebe Farm (Bicker Fen GSP) and 99.8 MWp at Sturton Road with a 60 MW / 120 MWh BESS (West Burton GSP) — to compensate extreme grid curtailment.

01
Background

Both PV projects faced extreme grid curtailment at their connection points — Bicker Fen GSP in Grantham and West Burton GSP in Nottinghamshire — which put their viability in question.

02
Process

One Hub Energy ran the techno-economic evaluation of adding battery storage to compensate the curtailment on each project. Scope covered hourly energy profiles, a full market price analysis across energy, capacity and ancillary services, the technical definition of the BESS including candidate chemistries, supplier analysis, CAPEX and OPEX assumptions, and a financial model with sensitivities. For Sturton Road, One Hub Energy modelled hybrid scenarios pairing the 99.8 MWp PV plant with a 60 MW / 120 MWh BESS.

03
Outcome

"Evaluation reports with recommended BESS options and sizing to offset curtailment were delivered to the client, with the curtailment scenario studies issued in November 2020."
