Pre-feasibility study of a 25 MWp PV + BESS self-consumption scheme for railway substations in Kenya

Technical and economic pre-feasibility of a rooftop and ground-mounted PV + BESS self-consumption scheme serving the electrical substations of a railway infrastructure in Kenya, with hourly demand curve estimation, energy modelling and simulation for sizing, risk analysis and funding structuring.

01
Background

A set of electrical substations of a railway infrastructure in Kenya was to be supplied from self-consumption generation, which meant establishing the demand first and then the size of the PV and storage able to serve it.

02
Process

One Hub Energy carried out the technical and economic pre-feasibility study: estimation of the hourly demand curves, hourly energy modelling and simulation to size the PV + BESS solution — 500 kWp of rooftop PV with a 400 kWh battery and 20 MWp of ground-mounted PV with a 4 MWh battery — risk analysis, and the structuring and planning of the financing. A 7-year payback was considered.

03
Outcome

"The pre-feasibility study was delivered for the 25 MWp PV + BESS self-consumption scheme serving the railway substations in Kenya."
