Coordinating DiÓptiBa: turning market prices and forecasting into battery dispatch decisions
Coordination of DiÓptiBa, a collaborative R&D project with Eurecat funded under Spain's 2021 Public-Private Collaboration call, developing an intelligent platform for battery participation in electricity markets, together with the definition of its value proposition and cost/service models.
The economics of a battery depend on when it charges and when it discharges, which in turn depends on prices that are not known in advance. Making that decision systematically requires both an optimisation layer driven by market prices and a forecasting layer, and neither is useful to a project developer unless it is wrapped in a defensible way of evaluating BESS projects. The collaborative R&D project set out to build that platform.
One Hub Energy coordinated DiÓptiBa, the collaborative R&D project run with Eurecat and funded under Spain's 2021 Public-Private Collaboration call. On the technical side, the project developed an intelligent platform to optimise battery storage participation in electricity markets, combining market-price-driven charge and discharge optimisation with AI-based forecasting. On the commercial side, One Hub Energy defined the platform's value proposition and its cost and service models for BESS project evaluation, so that the research output had a route to being used on real projects. Acting as coordinator also meant holding the R&D collaboration to the structure and reporting expected of a publicly funded call.
"The project produced an intelligent platform concept for optimising battery participation in electricity markets, combining price-driven charge/discharge optimisation with AI-based forecasting, together with the value proposition and the cost and service models for evaluating BESS projects with it. One Hub Energy held the coordination role throughout."
